Hello anglers Me and a couple of buddies are making a trip out to dinosaur lake. I've been doing a lot of reading on vertical jigging for lake trout in mid summer and was wondering if anyone knows any good spots or has had success with jigging in this lake. Any tips helpful as this is my first time fishing a mountain lake.

Warning Marker Added

General warning. This "lake" is an active flowing hydroelectric dam reservoir. It is a river. It is deep. The water is cold. When boating keep attentions for some floating and semi submerged sticks and logs. There are very few but do watch for them and steer around them. Enjoy the scenery and a smooth ride!

Narrows and the canyon. Beyond this point will encounter stronger currents, surfaces eddies and small whirlpools, noticeable changes in waterflows, scenic waterfalls, a tranquil island, bald eagles, great fishing, and the dam at the end. This passage is not a problem for most boats, just keep the power on and up on plane. Small light and open tinny type boats with low hp less than 50hp should NOT go past this point. The overhead power lines here are your landmark as the go-no-go point.

Gething Creek. Do NOT go past here. Strong currents and rapidly changing conditions as the WAC Bennet Dam loads fluctuate. Good spot to run up to, make a turn and get a good view of the waterside of the dam and spillaway chute.

Really nice island stop. Picnic table and firepit. A great place to stop for a break, stretch legs, and have lunch. Access it from the side in line with the table. Keep this space clean and sanitary for others folks please. Take out what you bring in --- including your butt wipes.

Ice?

I've heard that Dinosaur never freezes due to being in between two dams with massive water level fluctuations. Is this true? Also, can the launch be accessed all year or does the park get closed until a certain time? I went there last year mid April and everything was open and good to go, but this year I have a new boat that I'm desperate to get in the water and try out as early as possible! Any insight would be appreciated. Here is a nice picture from a run there last year. Parked at the black gravel beach by the waterfall.

Three times the line test

An undated report on Dinosaur Lake by Dave Newton, posted at www.best-in-british-columbia.com: "Had been fishing for lake trout all day with no success. Decided to fish for rainbows with light tackle and caught a few small silver rockets. "Just before dinner decided to try again for small rainbows as they had been jumping more and more during the evening. Was trolling slowly using a #2 Panther Martin when my line began to sing. "As I shut down the trolling motor I was losing line as the trout swam away from me. Just as fast as it swam away it began to swim at the boat...reeling as fast as I could as I was using six-pound test the fish turned and swam away from me again. After a few feet it turned once more and swam right to the boat. When it got close to me I saw her as she turned sideways. What a beauty. "My heart was racing as I deduced that the fish was a minimum weight of 3 times my line. After missing her with the first net attempt I turned her again and into the net she went. "When we got her back to shore I could not weigh her properly as my scale only went to 20 lbs. She ended up being 241/2 pounds. Was 36 inches long, 91/2 inches deep and 24 inches in girth. "What a fish!"
