Northern Pikeminnow
Ptychocheilus oregonensis

Northern Pikeminnow
Occurring primarily west of the Rocky Mountains, Northern Pikeminnows can be found throughout most of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and western Idaho and Montana. They have a dark green to green-brown back, silvery sides, a white or cream-colored abdomen, and a strongly forked tail. Their head is pointed and relatively long. Young specimens can be distinguished by the presence of a prominent dark spot at the base of the tail fin. In general, these fish tend to inhabit nearshore areas during the spring and summer and migrate to deeper waters during the winter months. Northern Pikeminnows consume mainly insects and fish, but may also eat mollusks and other small organisms. During salmon spawning season, they feed heavily on eggs deposited in redds and later on salmonid fry. Average size ranges from 30–50 cm (12–20 in) and 0.9–1.8 kg (2–4 lb).
