Lake Whitefish

Coregonus clupeiformis

Lake Whitefish

Lake Whitefish occur throughout much of Canada and parts of the northern United States, including the Great Lakes. They are a cool-water fish and are similar in appearance to other members of the whitefish family, such as cisco. Lake Whitefish are broadcast spawners, with spawning taking place at night between September and January. Gravel is the preferred spawning substrate, though spawning also occurs over sand. Lake Whitefish feed mainly on benthic and planktonic invertebrates and small fish, while also taking insects from the water’s surface. They are schooling fish, typically found near the bottom of cool rivers and deep lakes. Lake Whitefish make excellent table fare, especially when smoked, making them a valuable species for commercial fisheries and a popular target for anglers during both open-water and ice-fishing seasons.
