About Mazinaw Lake

Mazinaw Lake, located along the upper reaches of the Mississippi River in Bon Echo Provincial Park, is one of the deepest inland lakes in Ontario, a popular destination for lake trout, walleye, bass, musky, whitefish and pike. One of the best spots to fish for lake trout is offshore from Mazinaw Rock, where the water is about 300 feet deep. The lake's name is an Algonquin word describing the pictographs along this rock.

Here is a report from Mazinaw posted online by Angler's Atlas user adleach11: "(Mazinaw) is an oligotropic lake, so there are plenty of exposed rock outcrops and boulder fields, as well as hard or rocky bottoms. The lake is not busy during shoulder season and usually has little boat traffic, with the exception of the peak periods during summer. Boat traffic will affect fish activity. Target lake trout [in Mazinaw] during the spring in shallow water. A down rigger or weighted fishing line are best for trolling. Flatline trolling is fine when fish are active in shallow areas."

"The lake has two sections, upper and lower. Lower Mazinaw is shallower. Most of the fishing action is close to shore in 10-50 feet of water. Look for structure or for suspended fish actively feeding on baitfish. The area on both sides of the narrows entering lower Mazinaw receives the most fishing pressure. Walleye, pike and smallmouth bass are taken here."

LAKE ACCESS

Located in the townships of North Frontenac and Addington highlands in the Land O' Lakes Region, Mazinaw is about a three-hour drive from Toronto. Take Highway 401 east to Bellville, then Highway 37 north. Turn east when the highway intersects with Highway 7. From Kaladar, take Highway 41 north.

One of the best spots to fish for lake trout is offshore from Mazinaw Rock, where the water is about 300 ft. deep. The lake’s name is an Algonquin word describing the pictographs along this rock. Angler’s Atlas member Adam Leach fishes Mazinaw Lake and says that it can be a great place to fish with kids. “You should be lucky enough to target pan fish and bass as well as smaller pike in some of the shallower portions of the lake. Fishing with kids is optimal, especially if you’re staying at Bon Echo Park.” The best way to target these fish is with live minnows, leeches or worms and bobbers or sinker rigs, he suggests. He adds that while the peak summer boat traffic can affect the fishing, most of the time it’s not an overly busy lake. “Target lake trout during the spring in shallow water or troll in deeper water. A downrigger or weighted fishing line are best for trolling. Flat-line trolling is fine when fish are active in shallow areas.” Most of the fishing action is close to shore in 10-50 ft. of water. Look for stucture or for suspended fish actively feeding on baitfish. The area on both sides of the narrows entering lower Mazinaw receives the most fishing pressure. Walleye, pike and smallmouth bass are taken here.” Mazinaw Lake is also a great ice fishing lake, and The Angler’s Atlas has some pictures of large lake trout taken through the ice. Mazinaw Lake is part of Fisheries Management Zone 18. Rocks in Mazinaw Lake

For sure you need to be careful as soon as you get out of the North/South deep water parts of Mazinaw Lake. Campbell Bay, German Bay and another Bay on the extreme South end of the lake are all shallow. I usually motor in then use the electric. Mind you I have a short shaft Honda so draw about 8-12 inches of water, this makes it a bit harder to hit. It's a bummer to hit, had an inboard outboard previously and had the prop rebuilt 4-5 times! Love fishing at Mazinaw, fish are hard to find due to the depth of the lake. However, the depth of the lake allows the fish to really get big. This summer hooked into a 4 foot, 10 pound Northern Pike, hell of a fight he put up. He was released to be enjoyed by another some other day.
