Pumpkinseed

Lepomis gibbosus

Pumpkinseed

The Pumpkinseed is a species of sunfish native to eastern North America, but it can also be found in western North America following intentional and unintentional introductions. Its preferred habitat is warm, clear water with heavily vegetated submergent aquatic plants, typically within slow-moving streams, small bodies of water, and bays of larger lakes. Pumpkinseed feed primarily on amphibians and small fish, though they will accept a variety of other food sources. This fish is moderately small, with adult lengths of 18–23 cm (7–9 in) and an average weight of approximately 0.2 kg. The Pumpkinseed has a small mouth that does not extend beyond the mid-eye, with blue-green stripes on the head. The body is wide, with 10–11 spines on the unnotched dorsal fin and 3 spines on the anal fin. Pumpkinseed can be easily confused with other sunfish, such as the Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), but an orange or red spot on the ear flap, an extension of the gill plate, is the distinguishing feature between the two.
