About Bobs Lake

Bobs Lake is part of the the Tay and Rideau watersheds, both tributaries of the Ottawa and St. Lawrence. A large lake with more than 120 islands and 740 km of shoreline, Bobs features grant outcroppings and extensive marshlands. This combination makes it great for fishing for large- and smallmouth bass, lake trout, walleye, pike, black crappie, rock bass, bluegills and perch. Although lake trout were almost decimated 50 years ago, restocking efforts in the form of fish-rearing ponds have brought them back.

Troll the deeper waters and shoals early in the season for the best chances of landing a lake trout. Fish the shallow weed beds of the bays, Mud and Mill, to hook into a feisty smallmouth bass or pike. For walleye, concentrate more on shoals and submerged humps, or along rocky shorelines.

The Ottawa Region Walleye League holds an annual kids’ ice fishing derby on the lake in mid-February.

Bobs Lake is part of the the Tay and Rideau watersheds, both tributaries of the Ottawa and St. Lawrence. A large lake with more than 120 islands and 740 km of shoreline, Bobs Lake features granite outcroppings and extensive marshlands. This combination makes it great for fishing for large and smallmouth bass, lake trout, walleye, pike, black crappie, rock bass, bluegills and perch. While any talk of hot spots on Bobs Lake can be overwhelming, Sebastian Kowalczuk, former fishing guide from Bobs Lake Cottages says that, “because Bobs Lake is so big you don’t always have to fish structure because the fish move a lot. Finding drop offs and sand bars is key to success.” One of the first things to search out is the weed line. “First of all for Bobs Lake, any weed line drop off using 1/2, 3/4 oz spinnerbaits in white are awesome for bass, pike and walleye,” Kowalczuk suggests. He also recommends looking for the sand bars in about 6 to 10 metres of water. “Use topwater Walk-the-Dog baits and poppers for smallmouth bass. A long time fisherman Cliff and I go out every year bass fishing. we decided to bring my daughter Emily with us this year. The competition between Cliff and Emily was on, if you catch a bigger bass than I do you have to kiss the fish. As the day goes on I was being out fished by both Emily and Cliff as usual. Cliff being the more experienced and patient fisherman was in the lead. Pucker up Emily, Cliff says. As the day was close to ending who rises up and pulls in the biggest catch of the day. Pucker up Cliff, kiss my bass " Emily says to Cliff ". I believe Cliff has been screeched in by kissing the cod, and now he has been schooled on Bob's lake by his new fishing buddy.

Every September, some old university pals and I get together to wet some lines and catch up. For the past few years we've been doing this on Bob's Lake near Tichborne Ontario. A beautiful location in Eastern Ontario. Securing bragging rights has never been something we strive for, but on this the 12th anniversary of our boy's weekends I tucked into this amazing 12lb pike trolling a perch colour Blue Fox Vibrax tipped with a worm. It's the biggest fish yet for our gang and if the comments from the local marina were right, one of the largest they've seen in years on Bob's. Lucky me!
