Brown Catfish, Ameiurus nebulosus

Brown Bullhead

Native to most of North America, the Brown Bullhead can be found from eastern Canada through the Great Lakes, Hudson Bay, and the Mississippi River to Alabama, and west to Oregon and Washington. As a bottom feeder, Brown Bullhead prefers warm, shallow water. Avoiding daylight, brown bullhead emerge at night to consume a wide variety of benthic invertebrates, leeches, snails, small fish, and even plants from lake or river bottoms. They are known to eat nearly anything consumable. Brown Bullhead grow to an average length of 53 cm (21 in). They are dark brown to olive with cream or off-white bellies. An adipose fin is present. Tail fins are slightly notched, and distinguishable barbels on the chin are black to dark yellow-brown. Barbels are also present on the pelvic region, with saw-like ridges. Brown Bullhead lack the tooth patch on the upper jaw that is found in other similar species. Source: Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_bullhead)
