My son Tristan caught this beautiful Cutthroat trout last fall in Shawnigan Lake. We were using flies, trout bait and spinners for most of the day but had no luck. Tristan decided to put on a pink crank-bait before we left to try target some small-mouth bass and on the first cast he hooked up. We instantly thought it was a bass that he had caught but when it came along the shore we really surprised to see this monster Cutty swim by. The net was leaning on a tree not far away but Tristan hoisted the fish on shore before I could even get to the net. He was stoked beyond belief and this story will be one that we will tell for a long time.

Bass derby cancelled

From a June 6 posting at www.sportfishingbc.com: The annual Black Swan Pub Bass Derby, which was to take place June 21 at Shawnigan Lake, has been cancelled due to some negative feedback because it was a kill derby. I realize the lake has a great smallmouth bass fishery, but they are not an invasive species like the sunfish, perch, etc.
