My son Tristan caught this beautiful Cutthroat trout last fall in Shawnigan Lake. We were using flies, trout bait and spinners for most of the day but had no luck. Tristan decided to put on a pink crank-bait before we left to try target some small-mouth bass and on the first cast he hooked up. We instantly thought it was a bass that he had caught but when it came along the shore we really surprised to see this monster Cutty swim by. The net was leaning on a tree not far away but Tristan hoisted the fish on shore before I could even get to the net. He was stoked beyond belief and this story will be one that we will tell for a long time.

My son Tristan caught this beautiful 5lb smallmouth bass last spring. He was using a carolina rigged black plastic worm when he hooked this monster. Several other bass were hooked up that day including a really nice largemouth as well. This was the biggest one of the day though.

The chinook season around Sooke BC didn’t open last year until August. I caught this 27 lber on our first day on the ocean in 2019. It was the beggining of August and unknowingly to us there was actually a derby going on that day. Later I found out that I would have had second place if I had bought a derby ticket. We had been catching pinks for the first few hours of the day and we almost had our limit. Before we pulled the rods up to head home I thought I’d try a few passes real close to shore. We skirted the kelp beds and pulled the gear up to 20 ft. I could literally see the bottom. We were using a green glow hoochie with a green glow flasher when the fish hit. It peeled line from the reel instantly for almost 10 seconds. I guided the fish in gently over the next 10 min and my buddy Mike got it in the net. This chinook is my biggest salmon to date and was probably the tastiest one too!!

My son Tristan and I were on our annual fishing trip to the Stamp River last spring when he hooked into this beautiful chrome hatchery steelhead. It was actually the very first cast, in this specific location, that caught the fish. He was using a pink and purple maribou jig and casted from a rocky point upstream to a deep pool. The jig floated back towards us and when it reached the faster water, the fish hit. It was hard fight with a few big flips out of the water and I managed to scoop it with my landing net when it passed by infront of us. Tristan was beyond happy and his excitement lasted for weeks.
