I had broken my elbow and was in therapy in Cranbrook BC for the summer of 2019. Being that Physio ended every day at noon, I brought my boat along, bought a BC fishing license, and tried a few lakes close by. After several days of fishing and showing a few new friends from physio how to perch fish with a pickerel rig, This monster bent my rod into the water without knowing or ever catching a bass before. This was my first bass ever caught, and never thought they would go for a pickerel rig. It was a great fish fry among new friends that evening.

My son and I enjoyed a beautiful sunny summer day on Wasa Lake where we fished upon a unique freshwater reef. My son cast a 5” brown senko worm alongside the reef and a chunksized Largemouth Bass aggressively took it with delight. It was an action-packed few minutes as he reeled him in. It was definitely a proud father/son moment which will always be remembered.

Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC named this lake one of the "Top Spots to Take the Kids Fishing" Wasa Lake (near Cranbrook) Since over 35 of the camping spots at Wasa Lake Provincial Park are first-come, first-served, be sure to get there early on the May long weekend. On the eastern side of the lake, there is a large concrete boat launch, but anglers can shore fish from here as well. During the holiday weekend, there will be a free two-hour Learn to Fish Program for youth under the age of 16. This lake has an abundance of invasive species like bass and perch that are easily caught by jigging a worm under a weight.
