Northern Pike Minnow

Over last 4 days along the south end of the lake, near the boat launch and heading up north along the highway produced a ton of these fish. Average size is 2-3 pounds and several up in the 4-5 lbs range. Trolling using a meps black fury and a 2 ounce weight that rides on the line worked well. I enjoy going out and fishing and at least one can catch these fish. I often hear they eat the salmon eggs and trout eggs and should be killed. I even heard in the old days Sicamous (city close by) would have tournaments for most killed NPM fish. Then I look at regulations and and they say it's unlawful to willing kill a fish. I wish I had a final verdict from an authority on this.

Trusty old spot comes through

An Oct. 30 report from Craig Maxwell, posted by Reel Fishing Adventures, www.reelfishingadventures.com: "My son and I were out on Mara today. Turtle Bay was lit up on the sonar at 100-120 ft., but no bites. Finally, at the old, trusty Black Point, just into the narrows, we landed this lovely 5-lb. rainbow at 70 feet on an Apex slow troll. It put up a great fight. Jumped out of the water twice before we got it to the boat. Hope we land something similar on Sunday during the derby." The Shuswap Lake Fall Derby begins at 6:30 a.m. with registration at the Sicamous boat launch.

Can't beat the off-season

A Sept. 26 report on Mara Lake from Craig, posted by Reel Adventures Fishing Charters, www.reeladventuresfishing.com: "Headed out on Mara today, targeting rainbow. Having caught almost all lakers this season was hoping for rainbows. Anyway, three-quarters of the way into Turtle Bay finally landed a legal rainbow, albeit right at 50 cm. And a laker hit at the same time, so was trying to reel in two at once. The rainbow hit an Apex orange spoon the laker on a slow troll tiger fire. Both at 55-65 feet. As I approached the formation just off Black Point the sounder lit up and I landed a nice laker in the 8-lb. range. Put up a nice struggle. Even the pesky northern pikeminnow was a good size and put up a fight; the laker on the orange Apex slow troll, the minnow on an apex orange spoon. Was going to make another pass over the formation when the wife texted to say dinner ready so headed back. All in all, a fun afternoon especially with not another boat in sight. Can't beat the off-season on the Shuswap."
