About COBB LAKE

Cobb Lake is about 70 km west of Prince George and is a popular four-season fishing lake. The lake supports a healthy population of rainbow and brook trout and is regularly stocked by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC. In 2015, 20,000 brook trout and 10,000 rainbow trout were stocked in Cobb Lake. Dan Moffat from Northern Hardware in Prince George, says that Cobb Lake is a really good spot year round. In the fall, there is little pressure on the lake, and the trout are fattening up for winter. As the weather cools down after the heat of summer, the fish are beginning to be more active again. In the spring and summer, Moffat notes that there are plenty of choices. “The lake is always good for small spinners,” he suggests. Anglers can also try Chironomid patterns and Flatfish. “Another option is a bobber and worm, fishing plain and simple,” he adds.

When the ice comes off the lake in early May, pay attention to the emerging insects. Often, leeches and chironomids are early-season insects. As the summer progresses, take some time to note dropoff areas and weeds as these are ideal dwelling places for trout. Cobb Lake is great for families because of its proximity to town and easy access. To learn more about fishing this lake, drop by Northern Hardware in downtown Prince George and talk to one of their helpful staff at the fishing counter.

LAKE ACCESS

From Prince George, follow Highway 16 west for about 65 km, and then turn right (north) at Finnmore Road just before Cluculz Creek. Dropped into Cobb a week ago without the boat, just try a few casts from shore. Ended up catching 3 rainbows right at launch. Biggest about 18" fish. Tried a bunch of lures but only action was on small brown bingo bug and a black/yellow bingo bug. Pretty happy with casting 20' from shore. Bringin boat next time...

The hatchery offers tours and information, and is well worth the visit. You can see the sturgeon in their pools, learn about how they grow, and watch them up close and personal. The Recovery Initiative also offers school tours, as well as community projects designed to protect and enhance sturgeon habitat and recovery efforts. Family fishing trip at Cobb Lake. My daughter caught this nice rainbow. She was super proud of her catch as she brought it in all by herself. She doesn't catch a lot of fish, but when she does, they seem to be bigger than my catch.
