Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC named this lake one of the "Top Spots to Take the Kids Fishing" Shannon Lake (West Kelowna) Shannon Lake Regional Park lies in the heart of West Kelowna. The lake is accessible for both boat and shore anglers. On weekends during the spring, staff from Regional District of Central Okanagan, Peachland Sportsmen's Association, and the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC host a Go Fish BC Rod Loan Program. Youth under the age of 16 can come and give fishing a try at the new fishing dock – for free. All gear and tackle is provided, and a side of the lake is sectioned off and stocked with catchable-sized rainbow trout for the kids. Fishing with a buddy at Shannon on June 3rd produced nothing for the first couple hours. Switched to jigging a worm (barbless) / or bobbing a worm produced us around 18 LM Bass over a period of 3 hrs (all released). I managed to land this lunker on my last cast (just to get rid of my bait before leaving) ...clocked in at about 4lbs! What a great day :)

Family Fishing Waters in the Central Okanagan

In the central Okanagan region, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC designates five lakes as Family Fishing Waters: Yellow Lake, Shannon Lake, Mission Creek Greenway Pond, Swalwell (Beaver) Lake, and Dee Lake. See the map pictured here for more details. These "are great places to take kids fishing. All of these lakes have simple fishing regulations, are easy to access, and many can be fished from shore or a pier." http://www.gofishbc.com/how-to-fish/fishing-programs/familiy-fishing-waters.aspx

Almost there

There's ice on the top of Shannon Lake, but still not enough to walk on. We're leery about the thickness and safety of the ice on most of the Okanagan lakes. But a general rule of thumb is first two weeks of January there is a decent amount of thickness of ice. Wait a few weeks yet!

No ice yet!

Won't be long until Shannon Lake freezes over. Until then, decent size fish still being caught in the 1 to 4 lb range. Use Leech patterns and dragonfly nymphs. Stick close to the golf course.
