Great family fishing

Came back from our annual visit to Silver Lake Provincial Park. Some people 'diss it for being too small, others for its proximity to a highway, and others for its proximity to private cottages (some of who I would consider noisy/bad neighbours in the city). But I love it for its proximity to home, lovely lake, and great family fishing. No trophy fish this visit, but a few 10-inch-or-larger pumpkinseed, and a few large largemouth. There were three children with us and they all had their turn shore fishing and boat fishing, and were kept busy. While on the boat, I barely had a chance to get my own line in, I was so busy hooking worms and unhooking fish. As long as they were having fun fishing, I was having fun too :) No luck luring pike, and only gave a bit of time to catching the fabled lake trout.

Lake of the Day June 22: Silver Lake, ON

A long, narrow basin carved out by glaciers, Silver Lake is a good family fishing lake, the picturesque provincial park getaway. While the lake has fair to decent pike, bass and pan fish, the silver lining of Silver Lake is its lake trout fishery. Nine kilometres in length, the lake has a maximum depth of 24 metres (80 feet) and an average depth of 10 metres (34 feet). This is deep enough to support a year-round, put-and-take fishery for lake trout, but with enough shallow areas to keep the bass happy. For trout, troll a larger spoon or willow leaf as deep as you can. Look for smallmouth bass or pike along the rocky and sandy shorelines. Use spinner-baits, Husky Jerks or Blue Fox spinners. There are also largemouth bass and yellow perch in Silver Lake. LAKE ACCESS Silver Lake lies just off Highway 7 east of the town of Sharbot Lake and 30 km from Perth in Frontenac County. The lake is part of Silver Lake Provincial Park and its sandy beaches offer good swimming. Its two boat launches are located just inside the park boundary and just west of the park off Highway 7 in a day-use park.
