About ROCK LAKE

Rock Lake is a spectacular destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds with its abundant wildlife, birdwatching, trails and wildflowers in the provincial recreation area. Fishing adds to its appeal. Whitefish and lake trout are most sought, and rainbow trout, burbot and northern pike can also be found here.

When fishing for lake trout in warmer weather, it is best to try early in the morning, or just after dusk. Lake trout like to be in cooler water in the range of 10C. Drop-off areas are good places to start.

When trolling, go slowly. Try to troll only fast enough for your lure torque. Silver and blue combinations are good colours to try, as well as Williams Warbler and Loco spoons. Jigging is worthwhile for targeting burbot, using a Little Cleo or Krok. In fact, many anglers will hook burbot when ice fishing for lake trout.

Troll spoons or jig near the bottom, but not on the bottom. Burbot prefer the depths and cooler water.

It's not the biggest but.. I've grown up in Cold Lake and was blessed with great Lake Trout fishing all summers and winters then we moved... It would be 13 or so years before I get back to seeing a laker, but did so in a very special way. Rock lake is rumoured to have rising lakers at certain times of the year. So during this time I've learned how to flyfish and you can probably guess what happened! Yes! After a day of frustration watching them rise I ended up landing this gorgeous being and to top it off it was on a dry! What a beaut and an everlasting memory.
