About PIGEON LAKE

Pigeon Lake resembles many other lakes in Alberta with its large area and relatively shallow depth. These conditions provide great habitat for walleye, northern trout, and lake whitefish, with walleye particularly abundant in these waters.

The lake has seen some changes in the past several years. At present, a tag system is in place for catching walleye. Try a jighead with a minnow for starters. This may be all you need for a lot of action. Birddog44, an iFish Alberta user, reports "steady walleye just off the drop in 20 feet of water.” Anglers regularly report catching-and-releasing as many as 60 walleye per outing. In the summer months, blue-green algae sometimes grow.

LAKE ACCESS

Pigeon Lake is about 100 km southwest of Edmonton. Follow Hwy. 2 south to Hwy. 13. Turn right and continue along this road for about 25 km to the south end of Pigeon Lake. Ma-Meo Beach Provincial Park is located here.

Alternatively, anglers can continue along Hwy. 13 to Secondary Hwy. 771 and turn right (north) leading to Pigeon Lake Provincial Park, 10 km from the turnoff. This park has overnight campaing and a boat launch.

Any ice reports for Pigeon yet? Hoping it'll thicken up nicely with the colder temps this week.

Interestingly, commercial licenses were issued for Pigeon Lake in the 1920’s with a market for its fish in New York and Chicago. After only a few years, licenses were no longer issued as stocks became heavily depleted. Stocks replenished returning Pigeon Lake to the healthy fishery we know today. "Pitter Patter Lets Get At 'er!" My German Shepherd, Islay, can hardly wait to get out on the ice at Alberta's Pigeon Lake to pester a few walleye. She jumps all over me, runs off and returns to accost me until we arrive at our sweet spot. Once we're set up, she settles in at my feet to keep an eye on the hole, knowing where the fish come from.
