About LOGAN LAKE

Logan Lake is a real success story, with its plentiful and good sized trout. Logan Lake lies at the heart of a series of world-class trout fishing lakes. It’s situated right in town, and produces some of the largest trout in the region. Fly fishing works best in Logan Lake. Wes Kellough, local angler, says that black is a good colour choice for flies. Chironomids and Pumpkinheads produce good results. Black and red or black and white chironomids are great choices, and anglers can also try black leeches and micro leeches.

If you're gear fishing, Kellough recommends a smaller flatfish or spinner. Anglers can catch trout in the five pound range, some as big as ten pounds. The food choices for the trout are plentiful, and while they might be a little more finicky, the big trout are there for the taking. This lake is great for fishing in a float tube or pontoon boat. There is a quota of 2 trout for Logan Logan Lake, and only electric motors are permitted. While you're out on the lake, keep an eye out for ducks and other migratory birds. When you're finished fishing for the day, take a hike along the trails that wind around the lake.

Chilliwack Dart and Tackle has posted some ice-fishing reports. They suggest that for ice fishing, the “best baits have been krill, wood worms, meal worms , earth worms, or maggots." They also suggest that shrimp are popular baits.

The lake currently has a small campsite, a 60 foot wharf, two aeration systems, an artificial spawning channel and a population of both Kamloops and Blackwater River trout, the latter stocked due to the recent introduction of shiners. The Blackwater trout are aggressive and hopefully will reduce the shiner population. Logan Lake is stocked with both catchable-sized trout and yearlings.

Continuing the rehabilitation that the community has done on Logan Lake, the campsite will be upgraded. Extra campsites, landscaping, picnic tables and a fish gutting station are among the improvements the community will make, with support from Northern Development Initiative Trust.

Brian Chan, former provincial fisheries biologist for the Thompson-Nicola region and avid angler, was excited to tell us about the countless angling opportunities surrounding Logan Lake. “Within a 10 min drive from Logan Lake you’ve got Tunkwa Lake Provincial Park which includes Tunkwa and Leighton lakes which are very good fisheries that are open year round. “Heading south of Logan Lake towards lower Nicola is Mamit Lake, which has a day use boat launch area, it can be a very good fishery as well, particularly in the late spring months and then again in the fall. “Coming back towards Kamloops, you’ve got Face and Paska Lakes which are great family fisheries. Continuing east 10 minutes, you have Lac Le Jeune Provincial Park, which includes Walloper Lake. Both these lakes have fishing docks on them which, again, makes them great family fisheries.” Most of the lakes Brian mentioned can be found in the pages of this magazine. LAKE ACCESS Logan lake is located one hour southwest of Kamloops. Take the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) south to the 97D exit towards Logan Lake. If you’re travelling from the lower mainland head east on the TransCanada until you reach the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5) exit just past Hope. Exit on Hwy 8 and drive through Merritt. The Mamit Lake Road (Hwy 97C) exit is just outside of town and will take you the rest of the way to Logan Lake.

Campground undergoes upgrade

From the August 2014 newsletter of Northern Development Initiative Trust, www.northerndevelopment.bc.ca, which is providing $250,000 for campground improvements: The District of Logan Lake will be expanding the Logan Lake Campground with the addition of 12 new campsites while simultaneously upgrading portions of the existing facility. Logan Lake is an ideal community for attracting outdoor enthusiasts and campers from across the province. The community offers a pristine natural environment of mountains, lakes and forests, making Logan Lake the perfect destination for mountain biking, hiking, dirt biking and horseback riding. The Logan Lake Campground expansion is a much-needed foundation of support for the community in order to satisfy the increase of recreational tourism to the area. New picnic tables and fire pits will be installed at all of the campsites, which will also be graded again for improved comfort and access. The fire pits will be built with recycled brick taken from the Logan Lake Village Plaza, which recently underwent renovations. The landscaping and irrigation system will also be upgraded, and a new fish gutting station will be installed for visiting anglers. Frozen and ready to fish

The rainbow trout ice fishery has just started on Logan Lake. The ice thickness has been reported six to eight inches, so still use caution when on the lake. Try fishing the drop offs in 12-20 feet of water. Shrimp and krill are popular baits.
