Good fishing for wild and hatchery cutthroat

Cutthroat fishing in the Fraser remains good with both hatchery and wild fish to 50cm (3lbs) being taken. Best bets seem to be gear fishing with worms, single salmon eggs, small lures such as Hildebrandts or small crocodiles. There is a few fish being taken on small dark stoneflies on warmer afternoons.Local sloughs are also reporting fair catches of cutties when conditions are good.

Fishing for winter steelhead is steady

Steelhead- fishing for winter steelhead on the Chilliwack / Vedder river remains steady with a fair number of hatchery fish being caught from 6-18lbs. The annual brood capture program for wild brood stock began on January 15th and has been quite successful so far with about 30 of the 70 rood fish required being captured to this date. If you see a capture tube in the river -please do not interfere with it in any way as hatchery staff are most likely on their way to pick up the fish contained inside. Fishing has been best with roe, roe bags, prawns, rubber worms, jigs and spinners. The spey fishing fraternity have also been getting a few fish on bright zonker patterns, steelhead nightmare, and various other types of tube flies in orange, pink, chartreuse or black patterns. The Chehalis river is putting out a few steelhead from the canyon area but the lower river needed a good hard rain and some snowmelt to move fresh fish in. High tides to bring in winter steelhead

The Chilliwack/Vedder has just come up 18” from recent local heavy rains and is now dropping and clearing nicely. This latest freshet along with very high tides for the next week should bring in the first major run of winter steelhead. Most fish being caught are averaging over 10 lbs. Other rivers starting to produce steelhead are the Chehalis, Alouette, and Stave. Best bets are roe, egg sacs, prawns, and jigs. For more current information and tips, drop by Chilliwack Dart and Tackle. Cheers, Nick.

Lot of rainbows up to 2 pounds

Conditions for ice fishing are great, and the rainbows are biting. Lots of ice for walking and snowmachines, but not sure if it's ready for vehicles yet. For more current conditions on interior lakes and Lower Mainland rivers, drop by the store and talk to Kim, Gary or Nick.

Single egg flies (glo bugs) working well right now

Lots of cutthroats out right now, and single egg flies (glo bugs) on a fly rod are popular. For spinning rods, a hook and worm under a float works well. Look for places where the water is slow calm and slow moving, such as back eddy's or places where a creek is flowing into the mainstem. Peg Leg is one of the popular places, and you can also try fishing at Island 22, the main boat launch off Young Road. For more current information about fishing the Lower Fraser or other rivers in the area, drop by Chilliwack Dart and Tackle and talk to Kim or Nick.

Early Steelhead run arrives

The first few steelhead have arrived in the Vedder, including wild and hatchery runs. Most anglers will try float fishing (drift fishing) and the most popular baits are egg sacs, prawns (shrimp) or jigs. These are the most popular baits early in the season. There are some late chum still around but the coho are mostly done (very dark).

Frozen and ready to fish

The rainbow trout ice fishery has just started on Logan Lake. The ice thickness has been reported six to eight inches, so still use caution when on the lake. Try fishing the drop offs in 12-20 feet of water. Shrimp and krill are popular baits.

Edna Lake Freeze Up - Ready For Brookies

Ice fishing for Brook Trout has just begun on Edna Lake, with six to eight inches. Fish the drop off's in 12-20 feet of water. Most people are using shrimp, krill (died or plain colours), single eggs or meal worms. The big thing about ice fishing is if you fish one area and aren't getting any strikes, then move around until you start getting bites. These fish tend to school together in the winter, so unless you're right on top of them, you wont get them.
