An 18-hour drive from Calgary to Northern Saskatchewan but totally worth it! My Buddy Dan (on the left) and I have been friends and co-workers for over 30 years. We both love fishing! One of our favorite annual trips is up to Northern Saskatchewan where we spend a week or so camping and fishing. As well, we both enjoy friendly competition while we’re trolling on the lake. On this particular day, June 18th, 2019, we were both hoping to reel-in “the big one”! You know how sometimes, when your friend catches a huge lunker and you are genuinely happy for him (or her), while secretly, somewhere deep down inside you kind of wish it was you? Well…this may have been the case on this particular day. I reeled in the 34lb Lake Trout at around 2:30 pm and Dan scrambled for the net. We weighed the Laker (in the net) and then the trout and I posed for a few pictures. Next, our would be trophy was gently placed back in the lake. Dan was smiling, but I knew deep down inside he wanted a big fish! I said “The next huge one is going to be yours”! He looked unconvinced. Having said that, 20 minutes later, Dan had a trophy of his own…A beautifully coloured 31 lb Lake Trout, which we also released! I guess dreams do come true!

Has to be the best lake trout fishing ever. Late September fishing at Waterbury Lake when trout are in 7 to 10 feet of water you can catch 50 fish per day. On reeling them in you can see many fish following your catch, unbelievable. Not uncommon to catch many in the 10 to 20 pound range. Biggest being 34 pounds. Limit of 2 fish per day.

A proud son finally taking his proud dad on a fishing trip of a lifetime! This fish bit in about 80ft and took us into about 100. The arms were tired after trolling eight ounce weights but we managed to put it in the cradle safley! 31 lb personal best.
