Lake Of The Day : Mountain Lake

Mountain Lake is clear, cold and deep. It receives less fishing pressure than some of the other nearby lakes. Katherine and Todd Wootton run Ogopogo Resort on Mountain Lake. They offer some great suggestions about where to fish. “This is a great lake trout lake but it also has walleye, small mouth bass and muskie. There is a dam where Twelve Mile Lake feeds into Mountain Lake, which is a great fishing spot. The walleye in the lake are very recent (and we are happy about it), and that is where they seem to be caught. The Woottons suggest that in the open water, try trolling deep around the steep eastern shoreline. “Small mouth can be caught pretty much anywhere, but the inlet and outlet areas of the lake are often more active spots,” they add. “Ice fishing is amazing on the lake and we are happy to say that it appears “the spot” is about 250 feet in front of our resort. Guests catch lake trout, white fish, herring and even walleye in the early ice fishing season. “Since our huts are in such close proximity to the resort, it makes it nice for guests as they can walk in for lunch, etc. We provide shiner minnows and, honestly, people have the most success with our tip ups, dropping the minnow right down 2 ft. up from the bottom. “I guess word is out in the area as there are many pop ups and locals sitting on pails right out front of Ogopogo.” LAKE ACCESS From Minden, take Highway 35 north which runs along the western side of Mountain Lake.
