About QUENNELL LAKE

Quennell Lake is popularly considered one of the best bass fishing lakes on Vancouver Island. The nutrient-rich, warmer waters are perfect habitat for bass. Quennell Lake is stocked with rainbow trout as well.

“Fishing the early season (pre-spawn), one of your most effective ways of fishing smallmouth bass is fishing either jerk baits or crank baits,” says Robin Fearn, General Manager at Wholesale Sports.

“Try and match up the choice of bait with the depth of water that you are fishing. If you are fishing in 15 feet of water and the fish are holding near the bottom, you need to be fishing a bait that is designed to dive to that depth.”

“A general rule of thumb is the larger the bill on the bait, the deeper it dives.”

During the summer, the lake experiences significant weed growth, and Fearn recommends casting your choice of bait (or fly) close to the edges of the suspended structure. “Bass will lie waiting to ambush their prey as soon as it enters their line of sight.”

Jim McKinney, Fishing Manager at Wholesale Sports, has fished the lake many times and says “The first place I’d try is not too far off the resort dock. The biggest smallies taken out of that lake are very often out of that first little bit of water.”

The lake also has a healthy rainbow trout fishery and when targeting rainbows McKinney likes to fly fish. Early in the season he recommends using Microleeches and Pumpkinheads.

“Woolly buggers will [also] work,” says McKinney adding that “sparse ties are always better.”

If you are fishing gear in Quennel Lake, he recomends small Panther Martins and Blue Foxes in silver, blue or red.

Ranked in the Top Ten in Canada for bass fishing, Quennell Lake is unique for Vancouver Island. It contains may twists and arms making it interesting to explore and exciting to fish. The bass in the lake are abundant and thrive. Due to the nutrients from the surrounding farmland, plant life and insect growth flourish, in turn creating a perfect habitat for bass and trout. Robin Fearn from Wholesale Sports Nanaimo says, “the lily pads act like a nursery and cover for juvenile fish, allowing for a high success rate.” Fearn says that fishing for bass starts in early spring. They like to eat other trout as well as the chironomids, so when fly-fishing he recommends using a leech pattern. Try the Woolly Bugger, he suggests. Bass are warm water fish making them hardest to catch early in the season. Fearn explains that “when the water is 45-50 degrees bass tend to be suspended in the water.” This can make picking a depth very difficult. Fearn advises using large-tipped crankbaits or jerkbaits. This will allow anglers to target at different depths in order to determine where the bass are suspended. Fearn suggests fishing from shore during first and last light while the bass are seeking warmer waters. Bass tend to ambush their prey. As the water warms up it’s best to use soft plastics with a spinner bait. This combination makes a lot of noise in the water and is very flashy, so the bass will be attracted to it. Keep in mind that the bass fishery is catch and release. After being released multiple times bass will begin to catch on to what is happening and can grow wary. Fearn reminds anglers to “not be afraid to change your methods or techniques.” Be sure to visit Robin Fearn at Wholesale Sports Nanaimo to learn more about Quennell Lake and others in the area.
