About FACE LAKE

Face Lake is the place to be on a hot summer day. Way up high at 4,700 feet, it escapes the summer doldrums common to many lower elevation lakes. The trout are active here, and there are plenty of them. There is natural spawning habitat, and the trout are stocked with rainbow trout. All kinds of anglers will be happy here, from beginners to experienced. Joyce Van Tongeren from Mile High Resort says that while many lures and flies will work well here, resort guests seem to have some favourite producers.

If you're fly fishing, take note: Face Lake is known as a testing ground for fly patterns. if they work here, they may produce well elsewhere too. Some of the best are Pumpkins, Tom Thumbs and a 52 Buick. Other favourites are Halfbacks and Olive Scuds. One of the best, however, is the Mile High Special. Guests of the resort can find out more about this great fly. Gear fishers can also hook into some fabulous fishing. Van Tongeren says that some of the classics are also some of the best producers. Work with a Wedding Band and worm, trolling along the drop-offs. Van Tongeren also says that the resort office carries a large selection of other choice lures.

Fishing is good for most of the year. May to October is prime open water season, and there is excellent ice fishing from December to April. Van Tongeren hints that there are some especially productive hotspots on Face Lake. Guests can stop by the office for tips.

Face Lake is the place to be on a hot summer day. Way up high at 4,700 feet, it escapes the summer doldrums common to many lower elevation lakes. The trout are active here, and there are plenty of them. Face Lake was regularly stocked with rainbow trout, although Bob Van Tongeren, of Mile High Resort, says that a recent lull in the stocking program has allowed the trout to get larger. Van Tongeren notes that trolling flies works well. The Pumpkinhead pattern, and the Mile High Special, are two of the local favourites. Van Tongeren says that a guest tied this particular fly more than 20 years ago, and it’s still producing great catches. Gear fishers can also hook into some fabulous fishing. Work with a wedding band and worm, trolling along the dropoffs. Van Tongeren also suggests a black and silver speckled Flatfish, or a Fire Tiger Flatfish. Fishing is good for most of the year, and Face Lake remains cool. “The low pressure and high elevation makes for active fish. They’re good fighters, not sluggish, even in the summer,” Van Tongeren says. Van Tongeren also points to the inlets and outlets on Face Lake that are excellent fish habitat. The bottom of the lake is muddy, and there are some good weedbeds that also provide breeding ground for insects. Chironomids, mayflies and sedges are all good hatches to note, he says. But don’t think you have to be an expert fly fisher for Face Lake. Van Tongeren says that most of their guests are hobby anglers that just like to get out on the water. Great lake for beginner angler!

Have been to this lake a few times, stayed at Mile High Resort. Great people running the place, peaceful, and had tons of fun catching fish. Not huge fish, ave. 12 inches, but tons of them. There are a number of hot spots, best one is up the northwest bay.
