Family Vacation in Turner Lakes

August 01, 2016 The Fraser River opened on August 1st in tidal and non tidal waters. It was a great day with perfect weather and some very nice fish. The fish seemed a bonus as anglers relaxed and enjoyed themselves in just being out on the water. This opening is so important to the fishing industry and numerous anglers that enjoy this great past time. The past years have proven to be a challenge in keeping recreational anglers on the water as conservation concerns seems to place little priority to this sector. This has resulted in closures and lost opportunities that most anglers feel is unfair and unjustified. The Fraser River Sportfishing Alliance worked very hard to ensure the August 1st opening was a go. The Fraser River Sportfishing Alliance is dedicated to ensuring that the angling community is given reasonable and fair consideration in opportunity and notice. Please join the cause that supports true conservation and sharing of the resource in a fair and equitable manner. We are asking anglers to be selective and avoid Sockeye by not bottom bouncing during times of Sockeye concerns. This is key in demonstarting how the Chinook fishery can be allowed and not impact Sockeye runs that need to get to the spawning grounds. The Chinook fishery can be done with selective options that are being pursued by groups that understand this need. DFO has opened the river and will be monitoring if selective methods are being used. NO BOTTOM bouncing will be tolerated this year while there are Sockeye concerns. Non compliance will mean spot or total closures. This needs to be clearly understood and educated to fellow anglers or the actions of a few may impact our opportunity again this year. Sturgeon fishing is in full swing with great weather and lots of big fish. The river is dropping slowly and with very little debris, it makes for some nice relaxing fishing time. Finding these guys is the challenge and giving them what they want to eat is the other. Try fresh fish parts if you get some, pike minnows, roe and lamprey. Treat these fish with respect in everyway possible. They are tough but deserve to be handled with the best practice regulations at all times. August 01, 2016 Chinook fishing continues to be less than we expected. The river is looking very nice. There are tons of Chilliwack Lake Sockeye moving through the system this summer so anglers are catching lots of them. There is non retention on the Sockeye so make sure you release them unharmed. There are other species to enjoy as well that include Trout and Char. Follow the regulations carefully. Single barbless hooks, all wild Trout and Char are to be released. Fraser River Sturgeon Fishing Report
Our Fraser river Sturgeon fishing charters are consistently producing a lot of big fish in the 7+ foot range. Right now there’s some very big fish in the Fraser. Success rate continues at 100% on all 8 hr trips this season. Fraser river conditions remain excellent for Sturgeon fishing! Fraser River Chinook Salmon OPEN as of August 1st with NO BOTTOM BOUNCING!!!. See below for details. We highly recommend that you book your dates soon for the excellent salmon fishing that will start in late August and go until early November. Last minute bookings usually mean you might miss out. Fraser river White Sturgeon fishing is currently excellent for large fish! Success rate this season on all 8 hr trips is 100%. We have prime bait so expect some great results. We’re getting them over 9 feet with lots of 7 to 8 foot plus this past month. Expect incredible Sturgeon fishing until mid November and don’t forget to book for September/October/November when it’s the best fishing on the planet! Primetime for BC Sturgeon
Sturgeon fishing has been excellent this past month, not big numbers but big fish and that’s what sturgeon fishing is all about. All of our regular guides have been consistently catching fish between 5 to 9 ft and by the way things are going it’s not going to stop anytime soon. Yesterday my first fish was 8ft 3 and we didn’t land anything under 6ft all day. August through to November is primetime, Now’s the time to book. 2016 is shaping up to be a great fishing season and it’s only getting started. Waiting for Coho and Chinook on Chilliwack River
Chilliwack River Chilliwack River has not been productive for chinook salmon for a couple of weeks now, which is expected. Some fish can still be found in the upper portion of the river but most of these fish are now coloured and ready to spawn. Our recommendation is to wait until this fall when white chinook salmon and coho salmon start entering the system. There is also a pretty high abundance of sockeye salmon in the river. These sockeye salmon are heading up to Chilliwack Lake to spawn. Unlike Cultus Lake sockeye salmon, the Chilliwack Lake sockeye salmon run is fairly healthy (100,000+ fish) therefore catching and releasing them is permitted. If you intend to do this, please be sure to release these fish with care and as quickly as possible. Sockeye salmon can be caught by float fishing with krill or deli shrimp. Slow Fishing on Stave River
Stave River Stave River is very quiet during this time of the year because there are no salmon returning to it until October. For now, anglers have opportunities to target coastal cutthroat trout, northern pikeminnow, mountain whitefish in the system. These can be caught by either fly fishing with a small nymph or float fishing with bait such as single eggs, dew worms.
Capilano River Updates
Capilano River Capilano River is quiet, which is not surprising because river level is low. August has never been productive unless we get a spike in river level due to heavy rainfall. Just about all the coho salmon are holding at the river mouth now and will not enter until it rains again. You'll find the odd coho salmon in the river, but these are fish which have been in the system for a couple of months now. They are generally very tight lipped. Some important regulations to keep in mind right now. ALL steelhead, including hatchery clipped fish, have to be released with care. Bait ban is also currently in effect until the end of October. The alternative right now is to fish the river mouth and nearby Ambleside Beach. This is usually where coho salmon stage if the river is too low to enter. Best time is usually early in the morning. To catch these coho on the beach, you need a long spinning rod setup and cast small spinners or saltwater jigs. Fishing has not been productive. Only a couple of fish have been caught each morning out of two dozen anglers or more. Fishing should be good by now, which is somewhat concerning. Hopefully they are simply late. Some boats toward West Vancouver have been reporting some good coho catches so that's a good indication at least. http://fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/
