My daughter, Wendy and her friend Heidi went for a paddle and they took the fishing rods. Being only 11 years old, they didn’t have big expectations about catching anything. But when they did, the surprise is evident in Wendy’s face.

Because few people fish for steelhead in the winter, it is a good chance to be the only person at the ‘sweet spot’. We were on the Babine River, near Fort Babine BC, about 100 km from Smithers BC where we call home.

Each time we went fishing with my daughter, Wendy (rear of canoe) and her friend, Heidi, I promised a “loonie” to the first person to catch a fish. We had barely put lines in the water when Heidi hooked this Northern Pike—much to Wendy’s surprise.

This is my 6 year old grandson, Ade (A-day). He didn’t catch this sockeye salmon on the Skeena River but when he got ahold of it, he didn’t want to give it up. In the intervening time, he’s become quite a proficient fly fisherman.

Each year, just at break-up, my son, grandson and I would fly into a remote lake 25 air miles northeast of Yellowknife NT. The char (lake trout) fishing was always superb but there are also some giant pike in this medium-sized lake. As we were having breakfast one morning, 10 year-old Mack was tossing a large “5-of-diamonds” off a ledge, not far from our breakfast spot. His yells broke our quiet meal. We saw Mack standing on the ledge with his “Ugly Stick” rod bent seemingly as far as it would go. With our encouragement, he brought the pike close enough to net. The problem was, the net was meant for landing 6 - 8 lb char, not a 25 lb Northern Pike. After many attempts to land the fish in the small net, including one pass where Mack was saved from being dragged into the water by me grabbing the back of his trousers, we finally landed the monster. The pike proved to be a wonderful source of meals for the next two days and even more with the left-over that we took home with us.

The Big Surprise
Wendy Burrill and Heidi Rawlins didn't expect to catch a fish when they went canoeing together for the first time. But what a surprise, Heidi landed a small Northern Pike.
