Bauer's Onaman Lake Fly-in Sunday June 27

Today was our changeover day, last weeks happy customers departing and a new excited guests arriving. By 8:30 AM our new guests are getting settled into their cabins and excitedly preparing all of their fishing equipment. Cabin #1 holds a mixture of people with different thoughts on Walleye techniques. Two of them believe that trolling is the ultimate method to entice the hungry “EYES” to strike. They were preparing 7’ trolling rods (medium heavy) with line counting reels spooled with 8lb fire line. On the end of the fire line they tied Rapalas, floating with a couple of 1/8oz split shot 18” up the line. This method has been successfully used by these two anglers on Onaman Lake for the past 10 years. The colors of choice for today was perch and gold, with clown just in case the sun decided to break through. I am certain that these avid walleye chasers will arrive back with a few stories to tell later. The other two Guests in cabin #1 are serious jiggers, they were tipping their 6lb fire line with 1/8oz pink lead heads tipped with “triple ripple” tails a deadly combo for these guys in the past. These four serious Walleye fishermen have a large fish contest each year. The person that catches the largest walleye gets the privilege of putting their name and fish size on the plaque. I am not usually an advocate of these contest but guess what, these fish must be measured, weighed and released unharmed to qualify in the contest. Now that is the way any fishing contest should be held. It is raining on Onaman Lake today so only our die hard fishermen are on the water at this time. I suspect that they will be arriving back at any moment with their dinner in tow, can’t beat fresh 17”— 18” walleyes. Please remember, if you don’t release it, it can’t be caught again. Snap a picture and put the big ones back. If you would like to experience some great Onaman Lake walleye fishing, Fly-in to, Bauer’s Onaman Lake Cabins and Outposts. You will be just steps from the finest fishing ever. Check out our pictures at www.onamanlake.com Mike Bauer

Bauer's Onaman Lake Cabins - Fly in

It is becoming a well known fact that Onaman Lake is producing some very large Walleyes. This is something that Onaman Lake has not really been noted for in the past. Numbers have been the fame of Onaman Lake for many years not size. Times are changing, today there are many fish caught in the 24" to 27" range with many more even topping those figures. Eleven years ago the MNR made some regulation changes for Onaman Lake, earlier closing dates and later opening dates turned Onaman into a sanctuary until June 1st each year. In addition to that, the size and possession limits changed also. A regular license could posses one Walleye over 18" and 3 under 18". This would allow the spawners to grow and do what they are supposed to do, reproduce. At about the same time Carol and I purchased the fly-in cabins on Onaman Lake. We decided to do everything in our power to promote conservation on Onaman Lake. We offered all of our customers the opportunity to win 2 free trips each season if the used a conservation license, we also try to educate each and every guest on the importance of releasing the larger Walleyes. This is our eleventh season on Onaman Lake and trust me when I say, the fishery has improved. We now hear comments like “our arms are sore from catching so many fish”, and “where are all of the small fish”. If you would like to fish Onaman Lake feel free to contact me at 877-736-2626 or visit www.onamanlake.com. We would be pleased to host your next fishing adventure to Onaman Lake. Onaman Lake Fishing Report - 6.11.09

Ontario - Walleye Report by Pasha Lake on 06/04/2009 Onaman Walleye - 06.02.0970 or more walleyes 20” or better, average 24” The above is not a typo. On June 1st, Onaman Lake opened its angling season. The lake was deemed a fish sanctuary several years ago and thus fell under Ontario’s unique angling regulations. In fact, the lake is such a prolific walleye lake, it was used many years ago as the primary supplier for stocking many of the area lakes. Those lakes today are still thriving with impressive stocks of walleye. With an early close and late opening, Onaman lake is the apple in everyone’s eye and it’s June 1st opening is highly anticipated by many of the regulars to the Pasha Lake Region of Ontario. Now, if you are a fisherman, by our very nature we are known to stretch the truth. Therefore I am very guarded with the details I am able to submit in my report. Here is what I can tell you with 100% certainty. Since it’s June 1st opening, we have had several groups fish Onaman Lake. There has been a minimum of two walleyes 30” or better landed and released. The Joe H. group from Toronto, that group alone, landed over 70 walleye on June 2nd and they estimated their average fish to be 24”. There are several occasions where they reported having triples even quadruples while jig fishing certain points. A member or Joe’s group, Muhammad C. is an avid, I mean AVID walleye angler, not to mention he has fished all over the world. His tackle box makes the Cabela’s tackle shop look like amateur hour. Yesterday, his exact words to me were “This is the most amazing and abundant walleye fishery in the world”. So let’s put that into prospect for second. Say Joe’s group was a little liberal in their estimates and the landed only 50 fish. And maybe, because they were catching so many, they couldn’t measure every fish and a more accurate average is 22”. Does it really matter? My guess is, probably not. And, if it were just Joe’s group, I might be skeptical. However my personal experiences augmented by other groups reporting similar findings, tell me that Joe’s account of his experiences, backed up by his pictures, are right on the mark! Until next time… Update: 6.12.09 - I guided on Onaman yesterday and fortunately we were able to find some smaller fish in addition to the 24 inch fish we were landing all day. Fishing remains very good near rock islands and in small holes of 17ft or better. If you are interest in fishing Onaman Lake, please contact us at 866 333 5943 or [email protected] Thanks
