About Winefred Lake

Winefred Lake’s reputation rests with its consistently trophy-sized northern pike --fish of 20 lbs. or more are not uncommon --and walleye. Winefred lies in the southern Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo between Cold Lake and Fort McMurray. The lake offers excellent fishing for lake whitefish, burbot, and pickerel. All year long, the fishing is fabulous in Winefred Lake. Some of the best fishing, in fact, is during the winter through the ice.

Angler’s Atlas members have posted several pictures of the monster fish in Winefred Lake. Member gogogomez reports that jigging with a Five of Diamonds landed more pike and walleye than he knew what to do with. In the open water season, try trolling back and forth across the small bay in the northeast side.

LAKE ACCESS

Winefred is a five-hour drive from Edmonton. Follow Secondary Hwy. 881 north from Lac La Biche for approximately 100 km. At the sign to Winefred Lake Lodge, turn east onto a gravel road and follow it for 70km until it reaches Winefred Lake. A 4WD is recommended.

Winefred Lake’s reputation rests with its consistently trophy size northern pike and walleye. Northern pike 20lbs or more are not uncommon! Winefred lies in the southern Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo between Cold Lake and Fort McMurray. The lake also offers excellent fishing for lake whitefish and burbot. Three rivers continuously feed and drain the lake which results in high nutrient loading, causing the vegetation along the shore line to thrive. Not only does this allow for a great spawning area, but also an ample food source. Walleye are most active during the spring, but as the ice comes off. Jigging with a Five of Diamonds tends to catch a large number of this species. However, trolling is another great option. Try trolling back and forth around the small bay in the northeast side. Northern pike can generally be found all over the lake, however the east side tends to be the most productive area for pike. Eagle Bay has been known to house a number of large fish. For all of your fishing needs, be sure to visit Rob Martin at Canadian Tire in Fort McMurray. Martin and his staff are very knowledgeable and are great resource to use before ending out on the water. July 16 2016 Northern Pike 36" Caught SE side of Banana Island on Len Thompson no.1 'Orange Crush' Lure. My biggest fish yet ;) 12-15lb est. During evening approx. 7:30pm.
