Watch the Narrows for Thin Ice

Touchwood Lake is a great staging area for many lakes through the park. But be careful when travelling through the narrows (in the mid section of the lake), as the ice can be much thinner than on the rest of the lake. The water tends to move more quickly through this stretch of the lake, weakening the ice.

28 Pound Pike at Poplar Point

Had a customer bring their pike into the store last week, weighing in at 28 pounds. The fish was caught off Poplar Point. Also great results for perch and walleye as well. But remember that walleye are catch and release only (though some have been reported up to 8 pounds). Still no word on when the walleye fishery on the lake will be re-opened. Best Perch Fishery in the Area

Best perch fishing in the area, with big fat perch coming in about a pound, and 12" to 13" in length. Suggest fishing in the early morning seems, and in about five to seven feet of water for best results. Lots of people using salmon eggs, meal worms and maggots. Big pike are also in the lake. Try fishing deeper about 12 feet of water for these fish. For more local tips on fishing lakes in north-eastern Alberta, drop by Lac La Biche Sporting Goods and talk to Albert. Ice between 12" and 18"

Went out on the ice last weekend and drilled some holes. Thickness is between 12" and 18". Good enough to walk on but still a bit thin for vehicles. Guys are fishing on the causeway, with several ice huts already up. My recommendation is to wait until Dec 21st before you go out on the lake with your truck, so the end of the world doesn't happen.
