It was my second year up in Sault Ste. Marie for my college career. The famous world renowned St. Mary’s River was raging with higher waters than usual and I was invited out on a day trip boating in the rapids for Trout and Salmon. I had caught many Steelhead in the years past but only one Atlantic Salmon. The renowned fish every angler wants to experience. I was on a mission to get a double digit fish that I could remember for a lifetime. The day we went was below freezing with high winds, but I was determined to drop a line. When it happened I watched my rod bend and immediately tended to it. The fish on the end of my line was huge, dogging deep into the currents and shaking its head. I thought it was most certainly a large steelhead until I saw the purple glow of the head coming to the surface, after a good ten minute fight, I was staring face to face with the biggest Atlantic I had ever caught. It weighed an astonishing 10.8 pounds, smashing my previous 2 pound record. This was surely a day I would never forget.
