MILBANKE SOUND WEEKLY FISHING REPORT

Over the past week here at The Lodge at Milbanke Sound we have experienced some amazing weather and have been enjoying lots of sunshine with a light to moderate northwest breeze. So don’t forget to pack your sunscreen and bring your shades! Coho fishing has continued to pick up, much to the delight of our guests! We have seen a nice run of these salmon coming from the north, most ranging between 14 to 18lbs. These scrappy silvers can be found at many of the favourite hot spots close to the Lodge such as Cape Swain and Cheney Point. Some anglers have been successful catching coho at Emmaline Banks as well, an area that has been consistently producing halibut and lingcod for us all summer long. If coho are specifically what you are after, most have been very successful using hoochies and flashers. If tyee-sized chinook is what you seek, we have seen a variety of things working, but two options have proven the most effective; either cut plug herring (always a winner!) or running bait off a teaser head. Cheney Point is still the go-to spot for chinook and we happy to report that two Milbanke guests caught 40lb+ fish there recently. Well done to Mr Godden and Mr Furest on landing these big hogs! Fishing the early morning bite has been the key to success for the last several trips, so be sure to set your alarm clock! We look forward to seeing you for our last week of the 2016 season here at Milbanke Sound! Tight Lines! August 9th Fishing Report

It is certainly “Hogust” here at The Lodge at Milbanke Sound! Cheney Point [the local legendary hot spot] has been stacked with tyee-sized chinook salmon, offering guests a selection of trophy fish ranging from 30lbs all the way up to our largest this season; a monster that tipped the scales at 50lbs! So far this season we have seen slightly lower numbers in our overall salmon catch, however the fish returning to our dock are definitely bigger on average than in past years. And it’s not just bigger chinook salmon, we have had huge coho brought in as well! The action at both Cheney Point and Cape Mark has remained very consistent over the past few weeks and Milbanke anglers are staying quite busy out on the water. Bottom fishing has been remarkably good this summer as well, and the go-to spot for delicious [and plentiful!] BC halibut has been Cape Butt so far. The Chicken Coop is also a great place to add some variety to the fish box. The weather has been quite the mixed bag this summer, quite often all within the same day. We have seen glass-like water in the mornings with a dusting of fog, which usually lifts in the afternoons with the help of our northwest winds. If you are planning on joining us in the coming weeks, it’s a good idea to start your day wearing layers! Tight lines & hope to see you soon, Clare Hannigan Lodge Manger – The Lodge at Milbanke Sound, Central Coast BC http://westcoastresorts.com/connect/milbanke-sound-weekly-fishing-report-6/#more-3360

Tyee Salmon?

With salmon season in full swing, you might be wondering what the term 'tyee salmon' means. The Sport Fishing Institute of BC writes that tyee salmon are trophy chinook/king salmon, weighing over 30 pounds. They are "suprisingly common in provincial [tidal] waters from June through early September." http://www.sportfishing.bc.ca/fish/chinook.htm
