Great Lake extremely worth the trip. Amazing and very blue water. Highly recommend the lake. Pushing through to the large side is a little nerve racking because it’s so shallow. 4ft in some areas. It’s well marked and just push through the bottom is sand.

My first ever fly casting catch. Early in the morning before heading out on Deka Lake, I wanted to ensure my gear was set and ready for the day of fishing ahead. I landed my first cast ever so nicely and let it sit for a bit while my fishing buddy was getting his stuff together in the boat. With the sun in my eyes I was having trouble watching my indicator and to my unexpected surprise it was moving left to right just under the water surface. I pulled back on my rod quickly and set the hook and quickly landed this beautiful little 2lb 4oz Rainbow Trout. My fishing buddy was excited for me but jealous as we had previously made a bet the night before on who ever caught the first fish on our newly purchased first ever fly rods would have to buy the celebratory beers afterwards.

Each year, the Deka Lake Volunteer Fire Department holds a family fishing derby on B.C. Day long weekend. There are three top prizes awarded for the largest rainbow trout, kokanee and lake trout. There are also many more prizes available, including the Don and Marion Traill Trophy for the largest lake trout. The event usually runs from dawn to dusk on the Saturday, and from dawn to 2 p.m. on the Sunday. Also worth noting is that each year, there is breakfast and a BBQ. Check local information for further details on tickets and weigh-in locations. Deka Lake is great for fishing rainbow, lake trout and kokanee, and is stocked with rainbow and kokanee. In 2018, 135,000 kokanee and 60,000 rainbow trout were stocked in the lake. Mark Roseboom, from Lone Butte Sporting Goods, says that Deka Lake is popular for its kokanee fishing. “Kokanee get four pounds plus,” he says, “and are targeted by using bright coloured Apex lures and spoons. “Lead line or downriggers are essential to get down to the desired depth these fish like to be at,” Roseboom suggests. “Lake trout are also a great fish to target here,” Roseboom adds. “Using large plugs like the Lucky plug or the T50 Flatfish trolled down deep are usually a good bet. For lakers you have to be prepared to get down 50 feet or more.” Other great lakes in the area are Horse, Fawn, Watch and Green Lakes. A short trip further east provides access to dozens more. Travel with some standard lures and flies that can work in many of these lakes, and you will be prepared wherever you drop a line. Metal, silver, and red and gold colour combinations are good to have on hand, and Doc Spratleys, Willow Leafs and Ford Fenders are good all-around producers. LAKE ACCESS Deka Lake is east of 100 Mile House. Follow Horse Lake Road about 30 kilometres to Mahood Lake Road on the left (north) side. Four kilometres along this road is Burgess Road on the right (east). The firehall and derby site are located on the left, about halfway to the lake.

Caught this 27.6 lbs, Lake Trout in Deka Lake. Aug. 2014. This fish put up the best fight I have ever experienced from a Lake Trout. My Net was too small, since I was alone it was a challenge getting him into the boat.

Deka Lake derby next weekend

The annual Deka Lake and District VFD Fishing Derby takes place next weekend. This lake is stocked with kokanee and rainbow trout. The annual fishing derby in August boasts records of five-pound kokanee and lake trout upwards of 20 pounds. This is definitely a lake for those who like to fish.

Fishing week of June 28 to July 2

Fishing was very slow the week we were there. Got two sizeable bull trout on red wedding band trolled behind a silver and copper ford fender down along the shoals 60 feet seemed best.
