Vivian Lake is a small jewel just north of Prince George. Home to brook and rainbow trout, the lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating and swimming. The fish are big and the lake is perfect for some tried and true fly patterns and lures. Brian Ellison, from the former Vivian Lake Resort, noted that because the stocked trout do not reproduce, they put all their energy into getting bigger. “Try a Ford Fender or a Wedding Ring in black or dark green,” said Ellison. He added that trolling is best in the area around the boat dock, right around the island, and in a shallower area just past the dock. Fly fishers can try black leeches, chironomids and Doc Spratleys, again in dark colours. Ellison said that bloodworms are also good patterns for Vivian Lake. Head out about 200 feet and cast from there, or drift down around the far side across from the resort, around the bay area. Ice fishers are in for a treat. This popular ice fishing destination can be rewarding for patient anglers. It is helpful to remember that if you are drilling a hole, give it some time before dropping your line. Arlene Ellison says that there are often anglers on the lake as soon as the ice is thick enough. Use the public access. In 2018, Vivian Lake was stocked with 8,000 brook and 7,000 rainbow trout, and the lake is a family fishing waterbody. LAKE ACCESS From Prince George, head north on Highway 97 to Chief Lake Road. Turn left and drive straight out. Do not turn at the sign to Chief Lake; continue straight. Approximately 5 kilometres after, the road turns to gravel. Vivian Lake Road is on the right hand side, but don’t turn here. Continue straight for approximately 500 metres to the public access road on the right hand side.

Wow, fishing for brookies has been stellar lately! Usually around this time of year we see rainbow fishing outperforming the brook trout fishery, but not this year. People are reporting good success with black and silver chironomids.

Vivian Lake has been really productive lately. Some of the best fishing in the Prince George area has been at Vivian Lake! Larger brook trout coming out regularly.

Off and On... Frustrating

Two Weekends ago now the fishing was very good! Consistent fish from 7am-10am, then it died off. Went out again this weekend to the same location using the same bait (Shrimp) and had no action at all, all day. Anyone else having issues with this lake?

Activity Picking Up!

The past weekend was a little busier than usual, with some anglers coming back on multiple occasions. Brookies being caught near the public access. This is the easiest approach to the lake because the road is plowed there. Be aware that there is logging activity going on in the area, and access is on the logging road. Drive safe!

Quiet Weekend

This past weekend was quiet, with about half a dozen anglers on the lake. Most anglers still sticking to the far side of the lake near the boat launch.

Worms and shrimp

Brook trout being caught on red crawlers and fresh shrimp. Lots of traffic on the lake lately. Ice not strong enough for vehicles yet.

Ice still thin

The warm weather is making local ice conditions sketchy at best. Use extreme caution as reports of someone falling through the ice just last week.

Hard Fishing

Went out last Saturday. Fished all day with no luck. Fish are being very picky, nuding baits but not taking them. Frustrating. Hopefully the fishing picks up!

spent the Sat urday afternoon on Vivian and ad some of the best fishing in the 20 years of fishing this lake. Fly fishing wit a copper brown micro leech on sink tip line scored me 11 fish in 5 hours.. with 3 fish caught over 5 lbs in the hour between 6:30 to 7:30PM. the fish seem to be getting bigger every year due to alot of catch and release by the fly fishermen of te region.
