Wiper

The Wiper is a hybrid fish resulting from a cross between the freshwater white bass (Morone chrysops) and the anadromous striped bass (Morone saxatilis). It is widely distributed across North America, primarily in reservoirs, large lakes, and river systems where it has been intentionally stocked for sport fishing and population control. Wipers prefer open-water (pelagic) habitats with moderate to deep depths and are often associated with areas that support abundant forage fish. Unlike their striped bass parent, wipers are fully freshwater fish and do not migrate to marine environments. As an adaptation inherited from both parent species, wipers are fast-growing, highly tolerant of a wide range of temperatures and water conditions, and capable of thriving in managed aquatic systems. Wipers are aggressive piscivores, feeding predominantly on shad, minnows, young-of-the-year fish, and occasionally aquatic invertebrates when prey fish are scarce.
