Spotted Seatrout
Spotted Seatrout are found in the western Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, ranging from Maryland to southern Texas. They primarily inhabit shallow coastal waters, estuaries, bays, and seagrass flats, often preferring areas with sandy bottoms and moderate salinity. Their diet consists mainly of shrimp and small fish, especially mullet and menhaden. Spotted Seatrout commonly reach lengths of 30–50 cm (12–20 in), though larger individuals can exceed 75 cm (30 in). Key identifiers include numerous black spots scattered across the back and dorsal fin, a streamlined silver-gray body, and prominent canine-like teeth. An interesting feature of spotted seatrout is their ability to produce drumming or croaking sounds using specialized muscles against their swim bladder. Anglers frequently catch them using live shrimp, soft plastic lures, or topwater plugs, particularly during warmer months.
