Southern Flounder is a left-eyed flatfish identifiable by its oval, flattened body with both eyes positioned on the left side of the head. The upper side is typically mottled brown with diffuse dark blotches, allowing camouflage against sandy or muddy bottoms, while the underside is white. It has a large mouth with sharp teeth, extending back to below the lower eye. Adults commonly reach 30–60 cm (12–24 in) but can grow larger. This species inhabits coastal bays, estuaries, and nearshore Gulf and Atlantic waters, lying buried in sediment where it ambushes fish and crustaceans.
