Silver Redhorse
Moxostoma anisurm

Silver Redhorse
The Silver Redhorse inhibits freshwater streams, lakes, and rivers across Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence and Mississippi River basins. The species prefers deep-bottomed lakes and river systems. Their diet mainly consists of mollusks, algae, detritus, immature insects, and other small invertebrates. Their length ranges from 18-24 inches (46-61 cm). They normally weigh 2-5 pounds (0.9-2.3 kg) but can weigh up to 5 pounds (2.2 kg). Silver redhorse spawn in the spring around April or May, and typically prefer shallow, flowing channels. Reproductive maturity is usually around 4-5 years of age. Life expectancy is roughly several decades. Silver Redhorse can be differentiated from other redhorse species by their grey tail and 40-42 lateral line scales. Additionally, their dorsal fin has a convex angle and has 15 or more rays.
