Green Sunfish

Lepomis cyanellus

Green Sunfish

Green Sunfish are a small species of panfish that natively range throughout north-central North America and have also been introduced into many U.S. states, as well as northeastern Mexico and southeastern Canada. This species can tolerate a wide range of freshwater conditions and can be found in ponds, lakes, streams, and slow-moving rivers. Like many panfish, the Green Sunfish is brightly colored, with an olive-green body featuring bluish-green streaks, darker vertical bar markings, and a lighter yellow to white belly. They reach an average length of 5–6 inches (13–15 cm), with a maximum of 12 inches (30 cm). Despite their small size, they can be aggressive fighters, making them an enjoyable species to fish for. They typically feed on small fish, insects, and other aquatic invertebrates, and will strike a variety of baits.
