Green Sturgeon

Acipenser medirostris

Green Sturgeon

Green Sturgeon is a large, primitive-looking fish identifiable by its elongated, torpedo-shaped body, five rows of bony plates (scutes) instead of scales, and a long, pointed snout with four barbels hanging beneath it. Its mouth is toothless and located on the underside, adapted for sucking up bottom-dwelling prey. Coloration is typically olive to grayish-green on the back with a pale underside. Adults can grow over 2 m (6.5 ft) in length. It is most often found in large rivers and coastal waters, migrating into freshwater to spawn and feeding along river bottoms.
