Flathead Sole

Hippoglossoides elassodon

Flathead Sole

The Flathead Sole is a right-eyed flatfish found from northern California through the Gulf of Alaska and into the Bering and Chukchi Seas. It prefers soft, silty, or muddy bottoms, ranging from nearshore shallows to depths of approximately 1,050 metres. Adults generally favour depths shallower than about 366 metres, while juveniles are commonly found in estuaries and bays. Flathead Sole grow to approximately 50–56 cm (20–22 in) in length and can live 25–34+ years. They feed primarily on benthic invertebrates such as brittle stars, amphipods, shrimp, small fish, and other bottom-dwelling prey. Distinctive features include an oval, laterally compressed body with both eyes on the right side, olive-brown to reddish-grey blotched coloration, and a white underside. Recreational anglers typically target flathead sole using spear gear or hook-and-line methods with natural bait on weighted rigs to keep the bait near the bottom. Light tackle is often used to detect their subtle bites. Source: NOAA Fisheries (https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/flathead-sole/overview)
