Channel Catfish
Ictalurus punctatus

Channel Catfish
Channel Catfish is a medium-to-large freshwater catfish identified by its smooth, scaleless body, deeply forked tail, and eight prominent barbels (“whiskers”) around the mouth. Its coloration ranges from bluish-gray to olive with small dark spots, fading to a white belly. The dorsal and pectoral fins have sharp spines, and the anal fin is long with a curved edge. Adults commonly reach 30–60 cm (12–24 in) in length but can grow much larger. This species is often found in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, typically near the bottom, where it feeds on insects, fish, and plant material.
