Brown Rockfish
The Brown Rockfish is distributed along the northeastern Pacific coast of North America from the Gulf of Alaska south to central Baja California, Mexico, inhabiting temperate marine waters. It is most commonly associated with nearshore rocky reefs, kelp forests, jetties, and pilings, generally at depths ranging from the intertidal zone to about 180 m. Juveniles often occupy shallow, vegetated habitats such as kelp beds and eelgrass areas, while adults tend to move into deeper, more structured reef environments as they mature. Unlike more pelagic rockfish species, Brown Rockfish are primarily demersal and strongly site-attached, relying on complex rocky habitat for shelter and foraging. As opportunistic predators, they feed on a variety of benthic and epibenthic prey including crabs, shrimp, amphipods, small fishes, and other marine invertebrates, with diet composition varying by size and habitat.
