Banded Killifish

Fundulus diaphanus

Banded Killifish

The Banded Killifish is a small freshwater fish found across eastern Canada and the United States. It lives in clear, shallow waters such as lakes, ponds, and slow-moving streams with lots of plants. This species feeds on insects, small crustaceans, and algae near the water’s surface. Banded killifish usually grow to about 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) long. Anglers sometimes catch them using very small hooks and bait like worms, though they are more often used as baitfish than targeted for sport. They are easy to identify by the dark vertical bands along their sides and their slender, minnow-like body.
