Atlantic Salmon

Salmo salar

Atlantic Salmon

Atlantic Salmon are silvery in colour, with dark spots, dark backs, and light undersides. Adult Atlantic Salmon reach an average length of 75 cm (30 in) and a weight of 5 kg (11 lb), though specimens weighing up to 13 kg (29 lb) have been recorded. They are native to the Atlantic Ocean and are found in open and coastal waters near North America, Iceland, Greenland, Europe, and Russia. Atlantic Salmon have a migratory life cycle; adults return from the ocean to the river systems where they hatched to spawn. Unlike salmon species found in the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Salmon do not always die after spawning and can complete the spawning migration several times over the course of their lives. They feed on shrimp, squid, and other fish. Sources: NOAA Fisheries (https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/species/atlantic-salmon) and Oceana (https://oceana.ca/en/marine-life/atlantic-salmon/)

Beaver River Trout Action!

I went fishing on the beaver river late one afternoon for trout. I was near the Blue Mountains at a small waterfall where I saw tons of Rainbow Trout and Atlantic Salmon jumping. I cast my 1 oz. Len Thompson spoon there and wit in 5 minutes I'm hooked up to a 6 lb. Rainbow Trout! And I ended up catching one more the same size! Absolutely an amazing place to fish!
