American Eel

The American Eel can be found along the eastern coast of North America, from Venezuela to Greenland, as well as Iceland. They are present in coastal marine waters and estuaries during their spawning migration and are otherwise found in accessible freshwater, including streams and lakes. American eels are bottom dwellers and will shelter in burrows, under plant matter, or bank overhangs. They have slender, snake-like bodies, with a long dorsal fin continuous with the ventral fin. They lack pelvic fins and have relatively small pectoral fins. They range in colouration from olive green to brown to greenish-yellow, with lighter gray or white undersides. These eels are most active at night, and will feed on crustaceans, aquatic insects, small insects, and other aquatic organisms. American eels can grow to 1.22 m (4.0 ft) in length and to 7.5 kg (17 lb) in weight. These eels have a complex migratory life-history, laying their eggs only in the Sargasso Sea and undergoing several developmental stages before reaching maturity. Their numbers are currently in decline and are classified as endangered, and depending on location may not be allowed to be fished for. Source: Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_eel)
