Terrace, British Columbia
Welcome to Terrace, BC. It's here First Nations legends come alive, the mysterious white Kermodei Bear roams free and the fish draw anglers from around the globe.
Add warm smiles and greetings as you walk the streets and visit our many shops, eateries and places to stay and you'll soon discover why Terrace is the heart of the Skeena Valley and North Coast Mountains.
The Skeena River
High in the coastal mountains of Northwestern British Columbia, at the edge of the Spasizi Plateau, the Skeena River begins its 610 kilometre run to the Pacific. Much like today, the mighty Skeena has been the region's lifeline for millions of years.
The Tsimshian were the first people to occupy the area more than 10,000 years ago and they depended on the river for survival. At the turn of the century the Skeena became an important transportation artery for pioneer settlers, traders and miners. And so began the era of the riverboats shipping valuable goods up and down the river.
Today you'll find lone or groups of fishers landing the big one along the river banks or cruising the currents in their boats. The Skeena River is North America's largest un-dammed river and second longest river in BC with up to 5 million spawning salmon a year.
A Vast Variety of Waterways
It's a known fact that more salmon and steelhead are caught in the Skeena River and its tributaries than any other place in the world. The fishing opportunities are diverse and last throughout the year depending on the species and watershed.
Steelhead fishing is prime in the early spring and late fall while the summer offers a chance to catch all five species of Pacific salmon - King, Sockeye, Coho, Pink and Chum. Trophy-sized trout such as Rainbow, Kokanee, Lake, Dolly Varden, Mountain Whitefish, Lake Whitefish and Burbot can also be found in the lakes year round.
Access to the water is simple:
1. Cast into the Skeena from the banks of Ferry Island or into the lower end of the Zymoetz (Copper River) from China Bar.
2. Launch your boat at the Kitsumkalum Boat Launch and RV Park just west of Terrace on the Skeena River or south of Rosswood on the Nisga'a Hwy on the Kalum River or at one of the boat launches in our Provincial Parks.
3. Take a drive to the Douglas Channel or to Prince Rupert to experience phenomenal ocean fishing.
