Fishing the Hazeltons

The Hazeltons, British Columbia

River FishNew Hazelton sits at the confluence of the Bulkley and Skeena Rivers. It has been home to the Gitxsan people for centuries, who have maintained communities at critical junctions along these two rivers. Today, 'Ksan Campground sits at the confluence and is a great base for exploring the fishing opportunities available in The Hazeltons.

The Bulkley and Skeena River are known around the world as premiere salmon fishing destinations. About 15 km upstream of the confluence is the mouth of another world famous river -- The Kispiox. A watershed map of this river system is freely available for download.

Besides salmon fishing, these rivers are widely known for their world-class native steelhead trout. Considered one of the most prized game fish to be found, these rivers produce more large steelhead than any watershed in the world.

Ice Fishing around New Hazelton To complement these mighty rivers, the area has hundreds of lakes to cast into. Two popular lakes near town are Ross and Seeley Lakes, situated in provincial parks. Both lakes are stocked with trout and offer excellent fishing opportunities year round. For those intrepid souls who enjoy a frozen landscape, ice fishing can be extremely rewarding.

You are about to visit one of the best fishing regions in the world.

About The Hazeltons

New Hazelton is one of several communities that make up the immediate area. In fact there are 10 unique communities that call this area home. This includes New Hazelton, Old Hazelton, South Hazelton, six Gitxsan (First Nations) communities of Gitanmaax, Kispiox, Glen Vowell, Gitsegukla, Kitwanga and Gitanyow, plus one Wet'Suwet'en settlement called Hagwilget.

These communities are situated amidst a majestic landscape of the coastal mountains. The town of New Hazelton is dominated by the 3000-foot walls of the rugged Rocher de Boule Mountain.

Once you drive over Hagwilget Bridge, one of the highest suspension bridges in North America, you can explore the charm of historic old Hazelton. Right beside 'Ksan Campground is the 'Ksan Museum and historical village.
