MACKENZIE FISHING

Fishing in MackenzieThe District of Mackenzie is located on the shores of British Columbia's largest man-made freshwater body, Williston Lake. The lake was created nearly half a century ago when the W.A.C Bennett Dam was built and today supports one of BC's best freshwater fisheries.

The town is nestled in the western edge of the Rocky Mountains and has an idyllic natural setting. Extensive forests surround the community with numerous lakes, streams and rivers to explore.

A few minutes from downtown you will find many smaller lakes, like Gantahaz, Gataiga and Lost Lake. A larger lake located in town is Morfee Lake, while the Dina Lakes chain is located 30km north of Mackenzie in the 5,786 hectare Heather-Dina Lake Provincial Park. If travelling along Highway 97, some nearby lakes to try are Tudyah Lake that has a forest recreation site and Azouzetta which has a campground and cabins.

Fishing in MackenzieWilliston Lake is the main attraction if you want big water. This reservoir supports rainbow trout, bull trout (up to 25lbs), Char (up to 40lbs) as well as numerous other species. Many big rivers feed Williston, each with a vast wilderness waiting to be explored. Arctic grayling are also found throughout the system, as well as kokanee, a land locked salmon.

But remember to plan for the big water. The lake is not suitable for luxury boats as some sections contain considerable woody debris. Williston Lake is remote, and some sections still have submerged trees from when the valley was flooded. If in doubt we recommend obtaining the services of a licensed angling guide - at least for a day.

Mackenzie offers a basket full of outdoor opportunities from snowmobiling, skiing and ice-fishing in the winter, to camping, cycling and fishing in the summer.
