All Weather Walleye...

This spring proved to be a challenge when I visited Charlie lake this year. Due to a heavy snow pack over the past winter, the water level was very high, and finding feeding fish was a bit of a challenge.Spring run off brought a lot of mud ,silt and sediment from the tributaries and along with submerged wood and debris. played havoc with my depth finder and boat. The fish flies were at the peak of their early spring time hatch, and they were so thick that you need not to have brought a lunch.!! their numbers and volume were at a level so immense that the surrounding area sounded as if there were a gas powered generator running steady.I figured that the walleye were either still spawning or were just entering their post spawn activities. This was the first week in June, and temperatures were still fluctuating above the surface. and below as well.I chose to start fishing in 4 meters of water, staying fairly tight to the shore line . my lure of choice was a floating Rapala shad imitation, with an 1/8 ounce weight. this combo kept me tight to the bottom and allowed me to troll slowly while bottom bouncing.Although this pattern proved to work. it was difficult to control my speed and maintain a consistent depth due to gusty winds and thunder storms . I then decided that it might be better to just anchor in the proper depth and switch over to 1/8 oz jigs.(chartruse/black power grubs.) This too worked quite well, and my partner and myself had no trouble leaving Charlie with our 3 fish limit at the end of the day.I was hoping to hook into a few of the jumbo perch that are also in the shallows of the lake. but no such luck.! On my second visit to Charlie, the weather had stabilized and the water temp was a balmy 56 c which seemed to get the walleye in a feeding frenzy. !! It was June 24/11 and the action was frantic. !! we managed to land a 6 kg pike after a lengthy battle. my rapala took a beating but survived.! We again failed to hook any perch. but we were so busy having fun with the walleye . we hardly noticed. I have caught some very respectable perch in this lake. also some sizable ling-cod.(Burbot) I reside in Chetwynd. but I make it a point to make several trips to Charlie lake every year. the fishing is alway’s good ,and it is a great place to take your kids. Both boat launches are open until the fall,I prefer to use the launch on the Charlie lake store side. (the Alaska highway side. there are a few rocks to watch out for. but other wise. it is just fine. There are plenty of camp site’s at both provincial park’s and lots to do and see for the young. and the young at heart. Tight lines to all.!! hope to see you out there. !!
