SOUTH CARIBOO A FISHERMAN'S PARADISE
The South Cariboo was first settled during British Columbia's gold rush in the 1860's. Today the mines and prospectors are mostly memories, but the area lakes still glitter as gold and prospecting for new water is half the fun.
This area is often described as a fisherman's paradise this unique region which extends from Clinton to Lac La Hache along Highway 97, and taking in the world famous 'Fishing Highway' along Highway 24. Rainbow trout are the most common species of sport fish, but don't forget there are also kokanee (landlocked sockeye), lake trout, burbot and whitefish.
For early birds, the ice is off most lower elevation lakes in April and spring fishing is a great way to shake off the winter coat. Not to mention the fishing in spring can be some of the best all year! Late spring and early summer fishing are prized opportunities for fly fishers. Mayflies and Sedge hatches are prolific in this region and there are numerous choices of water to cast your line into. Download map of area.
During the summer there are many events to enjoy including several fishing derbies. Take a look at the South Cariboo Event Calendar to plan for one of these events. Download events listing.
There are accommodations on most of the bigger lakes and commonly offer a wide range of activities to suit many needs. To learn more about the vacation options in this region, download the South Cariboo accommodations table to plan your trip. Download accommodation table.
To learn more about the complete range of activities that the South Cariboo has to offer, drop in the Visitor Centre in 100 Mile House, along Highway 97. It is in a log building beside the biggest pair of cross country skis ever seen. You can't miss it!
